TOEFL iBT Practice Test 12

AI-generated practice paper in the style of TOEFL iBT — original material, not a reproduction of any real exam paper, following the official task types. Listening audio is read aloud by your browser's voice. For Speaking you can record yourself and compare with a model answer, and Writing tasks include a model answer — neither is scored automatically, since that needs real speech and writing evaluation this site does not offer for this exam.

Read an Academic Passage

Read the passage and answer the questions.

Dendrochronology, the scientific study of tree rings, relies on a straightforward biological fact: in temperate climates, trees typically add one visible growth ring per year, and the width and characteristics of that ring reflect the specific growing conditions of that particular year, with wide rings generally indicating favourable growth conditions such as ample rainfall and moderate temperatures, and narrow rings indicating stress from drought, extreme cold, or other unfavourable conditions. Because trees growing in the same climatic region tend to show similar patterns of wide and narrow rings in the same years, scientists can match overlapping ring patterns from living trees, dead trees, and even ancient wood recovered from archaeological sites or old buildings to construct a continuous chronology extending back thousands of years beyond the lifespan of any single tree, a technique called crossdating. This continuous record has proven valuable well beyond dating wooden artifacts and historic structures; because tree rings preserve a year-by-year record of climate conditions, researchers use dendrochronology to reconstruct historical rainfall and temperature patterns, and even to identify the years of specific volcanic eruptions, since eruptions that inject enough ash and aerosols into the atmosphere can cause a detectable, widespread pattern of unusually narrow rings, sometimes called a frost ring, across trees in distant regions during the affected growing season. The field has also provided crucial calibration data for radiocarbon dating, since precisely dated tree rings allow scientists to correct for small historical fluctuations in atmospheric radiocarbon levels, improving the accuracy of that entirely separate dating method.

Write an Email

Write an email that responds to the situation.

You are a teaching assistant. A student has asked for an extension on an essay. You want to write to the whole class about a change in the submission process. In your email, do the following: - Announce the new submission method. - Explain the reason for the change. - Remind students of the deadline and the penalty for lateness.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Dear students, I am writing to inform you that essays for this course must now be submitted online through the course website rather than handed in on paper. Please upload a single PDF file, and make sure your name is on the first page. The reason for the change is that several papers were misplaced last term, which caused problems for both students and markers. Online submission gives you a timestamp and an automatic receipt, so nothing can be lost. As a reminder, the deadline is Friday, 5 December, at noon. Late essays will lose five percent of the mark for each day, so please do not leave it until the last minute. If you have any technical problems, contact me immediately. Best wishes, Rachel Cooper

Write for an Academic Discussion

Read the discussion and write a post that contributes to it.

Professor Diaz: In our ethics class, we are discussing honesty. Is it ever acceptable to tell a small lie to protect someone's feelings? Please give your opinion with examples. Grace: I think it's fine. If a friend cooks a meal that isn't great, saying you enjoyed it costs nothing and makes them happy. Ravi: Lying is never good. Once people find out, they stop trusting you. It's better to be honest in a kind way. Write a post that contributes to the discussion (at least 100 words).

Model answer: I tend to agree with Ravi, though I understand Grace's point. Small lies about trivial things, such as pretending to like a present, can seem harmless and even polite. They avoid unnecessary conflict. However, I think it is usually possible to be both honest and kind. If a friend's cooking is disappointing, you can say that you appreciate the effort and suggest that you would like to try something different next time. That is truthful and does not hurt. The danger of white lies is that they can become a habit, and then people cannot rely on what we say when it matters. Trust is very hard to rebuild, so I would rather choose careful honesty than a comfortable lie.
