AI-generated practice paper in the style of TOEFL iBT — original material, not a reproduction of any real exam paper, following the official task types. Listening audio is read aloud by your browser's voice. For Speaking you can record yourself and compare with a model answer, and Writing tasks include a model answer — neither is scored automatically, since that needs real speech and writing evaluation this site does not offer for this exam.

Suspension bridges support their roadway by hanging it from large main cables that pass over tall towers and anchor into solid ground or massive concrete blocks at each end, a design capable of spanning far greater distances without intermediate support than beam or arch bridges typically allow, which is why the technique became essential for crossing wide rivers, deep gorges, and busy harbour channels. The main cables, though appearing solid from a distance, are typically bundled from thousands of individual high-strength steel wires spun together on site during construction, a labour-intensive process pioneered in its modern form during the building of the Brooklyn Bridge in the nineteenth century. Smaller vertical suspender cables then transfer the deck's weight up to these main cables at regular intervals, distributing the load evenly along the bridge's length. Because a long suspended deck is inherently flexible, engineers must account carefully for wind-induced motion; the catastrophic collapse of Washington State's Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940, filmed dramatically as the deck twisted violently before breaking apart, demonstrated the danger of a related phenomenon called aeroelastic flutter, in which wind interacts destructively with a structure's own natural vibration. That failure fundamentally reshaped bridge engineering practice, leading to systematic wind-tunnel testing of bridge deck designs and the addition of stiffening trusses or aerodynamic deck shapes specifically intended to resist this kind of dangerous, self-reinforcing oscillation in future designs.

You are helping to organise a charity run on campus. Write an email to the sports department asking for their support. In your email, do the following: - Give details about the event. - Explain what help you need. - Say how the event will benefit the community.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Dear Sports Department, I am writing on behalf of the students' union to ask for your help with a charity run that we are organising on Saturday, 3 May. The five-kilometre route will start at the main gate, circle the lake and finish at the sports hall. We would be very grateful if you could lend us the finish-line banner and some water stations, and if two staff members could help with first aid during the race. We would also like to use the changing rooms. All the money raised will be given to the local children's hospital, which is planning to buy new equipment. We expect at least two hundred runners, so it should make a real difference. Thank you for considering our request. Best regards, Terrence Ali

Write for an Academic Discussion

Read the discussion and write a post that contributes to it.

Professor Yamada: In our sports science class, we are asking whether professional athletes deserve the huge salaries they receive. What do you think? Please explain your reasoning. Fiona: They deserve it. They train for years, and they bring in billions from tickets and advertising. Mark: It's ridiculous when nurses and teachers earn so little. Society should value useful work more than entertainment. Write a post that contributes to the discussion (at least 100 words).
Show sample answer
Model answer: I understand both views, but I lean towards Mark's position. Fiona is correct that top athletes generate enormous income, and their careers are short and risky, so it is understandable that they are paid well. If a club earns millions from a player, it is not surprising that some of the money goes to him. Nevertheless, I believe the difference between their salaries and those of teachers or nurses shows something wrong with our priorities. Those workers contribute directly to people's health and education every day. I do not think athletes should be paid less by force, but I think governments could tax very high incomes more heavily and use the money to raise salaries in essential jobs. That would be a fairer way to recognise what society truly needs.
