Role-play: Moving a Group Project Meeting
Speaking
Role-play
You are a university student working on a group presentation. Your classmate Mert is organising the team, and you need to ask him to move Thursday's meeting.
Partner: "Hi, I got your message. Why do you want to change the meeting? Thursday was the only day that suited everyone."
Your turn: Apologise and explain that you have a lab test on Friday morning and need time to prepare.

Model answer: I'm really sorry about this, I know it's inconvenient. The thing is, I've just found out that I have a lab test on Friday morning, and I'd like to spend Thursday evening revising. Would it be possible to meet earlier in the day instead?
Partner: "Earlier in the day is difficult. Some of us have lectures until two. What time were you thinking of?"
Your turn: Suggest half past two and offer to book a room in the library.
Show sample answer
Model answer: How about half past two, straight after the last lecture finishes? I could book a group room in the library this afternoon, so we wouldn't have to waste time looking for somewhere to sit.
Partner: "Half past two could work, but we'll only have an hour before the library closes its group rooms. Is that enough to finish the slides?"
Your turn: Promise to send your part of the slides tonight so the meeting can be short.
Show sample answer
Model answer: It should be, as long as we're well prepared. I'll send you my section of the slides tonight, so we can spend the hour checking everything fits together instead of writing from scratch.
Partner: "That would really help. Is there anything else we should prepare in advance?"
Your turn: Suggest everyone reads the feedback on the last draft and brings two ideas for the conclusion.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Perhaps everyone could read through the feedback we got on the last draft, and bring a couple of ideas for the conclusion. That way we can decide quickly and still leave on time.
