Role-play: Interview at a Science Museum
Speaking
Role-play
You are applying for the post of education officer at a science museum in Istanbul. The head of the department is interviewing you, and you want to make a strong impression.
Partner: "Thank you for coming in. Could you tell me what attracted you to this particular role?"
Your turn: Explain that you enjoy making science accessible to young people and mention your teaching experience.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Thank you for having me. What appeals to me most is the chance to make science feel accessible and exciting, especially for young visitors. I spent two years running weekend workshops at a community centre, and seeing a child's face when an experiment works is what drew me to this kind of work.
Partner: "That sounds relevant. Can you describe a time when a session didn't go as planned and how you dealt with it?"
Your turn: Describe a workshop where the equipment failed and how you adapted.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Certainly. During one workshop on electricity, the batteries we had ordered turned out to be faulty just as the children arrived. Rather than cancel, I turned it into a challenge, asking them to work out why the circuit wasn't working. It ended up being the liveliest session of the term.
Partner: "Interesting. We often work with school groups of very different ages. How would you adapt your approach?"
Your turn: Explain how you would change your language and activities for different age groups.
Show sample answer
Model answer: I'd begin by adjusting the language and the level of detail, using concrete examples with younger pupils and posing open questions to older ones. I'd also vary the activities, so that smaller children can handle objects while teenagers debate or design their own experiments.
Partner: "Thank you. Before we finish, do you have any questions for us?"
Your turn: Ask about training opportunities and how the museum measures the success of its programmes.
Show sample answer
Model answer: Yes, I do. I'd be keen to know what kind of training is offered to new staff, and also how the museum evaluates its educational programmes, whether through visitor feedback, teacher surveys or something else.
