A Letter to the Library Manager
Writing
IELTS-style writing task
Before you submit, check: ✓ I covered all three bullet points in the prompt ✓ I used a formal tone and correct opening and closing (Yours faithfully) ✓ I made a clear, polite suggestion with a reason ✓ I wrote in clear paragraphs of about 150 words or more
You are a student at a local college and you use the public library near your home. The library is closed on Sunday afternoons and closes at six o'clock on weekdays, which makes it difficult to study before exams.
Write a letter to the library manager. In your letter:
- introduce yourself and explain why you use the library
- describe the problem with the opening hours
- suggest a change and explain how it would help.
Write at least 150 words. Begin your letter with Dear Sir or Madam.

Model answer: Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you as a regular user of the Riverside Library. I am currently studying for my final exams at the local college, and I come to the library at least four times a week because it is much quieter than my home, where I share a small flat with two other students. The library also provides books and online resources that I could not afford to buy myself.
Unfortunately, the present opening hours make it difficult to prepare properly. As the library closes at six o'clock on weekdays, I can only study there for an hour or so after my classes finish. Moreover, since it is closed on Sunday afternoons, I cannot use it on the day when I have the most free time.
I would therefore like to suggest that the library stays open until eight o'clock on weekday evenings, at least during the exam period from May to July. It would also be very helpful if it could open on Sunday afternoons. I am sure that many other students would benefit from these changes, and extra visitors might even increase the number of people using the library's services.
Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Aylin Kaya
