In many countries, teenagers are getting less sleep than they need, and this is affecting their health and their performance at school.
What do you think are the main causes of this problem? What measures could schools, families and individuals take to improve the situation?

Model answer: Getting enough sleep is widely recognised as vital for physical growth, concentration and emotional balance, yet surveys in many countries show that a large proportion of teenagers regularly fall short. This essay will examine the main reasons behind the trend and suggest measures that could be taken at several levels.
One of the principal causes is the pervasive presence of screens. Smartphones and tablets are often used late into the night, not only for entertainment but also for chatting with friends, and the bright light they emit can interfere with the body's natural rhythm. A second factor is the pressure of school itself: heavy homework loads, private lessons and exam preparation leave little time for relaxation, so that sleep is sacrificed to make up lost hours. Finally, the biological clock of teenagers shifts later during adolescence, which means that early school start times are poorly matched to their natural pattern.
Several remedies can be proposed. Schools could begin lessons somewhat later in the morning, as has been tried in some regions with encouraging results, and they might limit the volume of homework set on weekday evenings. Families, for their part, can agree on rules, such as leaving phones outside the bedroom after a certain hour, which would be far easier to follow if parents also observed them. At an individual level, teenagers who understand how sleep affects their mood and memory are more likely to protect it, so education about healthy habits should be part of the curriculum.
In conclusion, the lack of sleep among teenagers stems from technology, academic pressure and biology, and only a combined effort by schools, parents and young people themselves is likely to bring lasting improvement.
