Model answer: Public transport is an essential part of daily life for millions of students, and the question of who should pay for it is a matter of ongoing debate. While some argue that students should travel free of charge, others believe that public money should be used to improve the whole transport network. In my opinion, a balanced approach is the most sensible solution.
Those who support free travel for students point out that education should be as accessible as possible. Many families, especially those who live far from schools or universities, spend a considerable part of their income on tickets. If this cost were removed, young people from poorer backgrounds would find it easier to attend classes regularly. In addition, free buses and trains could encourage students to leave their cars or parents' lifts behind, which would reduce traffic and pollution around campuses.
On the other hand, critics argue that giving a benefit to one group is unfair when the whole system needs investment. In many cities, buses are overcrowded and unreliable, and the money used for free tickets might be more useful if it paid for new vehicles, more frequent services and safer stations. Everyone, including students, would benefit from a faster and more comfortable journey.
Personally, I believe that the best solution lies somewhere in the middle. Governments could offer heavily reduced fares for students while also investing in better services, so that low ticket prices are matched by good quality. A cheap ticket is of little value if the bus never arrives.
In conclusion, although free student transport has clear social advantages, it should not come at the expense of improvements that would help all passengers.
